Experts stress importance of pool safety for kids

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

As the summer temperatures begin to rise, more and more families will be spending time at the pool.

Officials at Toledo Hospital say they've already seen five near drowning accidents for last month, which is more than double what they saw all last summer. Officials say every day, 10 people die from drowning and at least 2 of the 10 are children. According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning remains the leading cause death for young children. More than ever, experts are stressing the importance of life jackets for young children.

"Do not rely on water wings or pool noodles with your child in the water. It's also a good idea that they've taken swim lessons but don't rely on that even the best swimmers can find themselves in some trouble", Says Gina Veres, Injury Prevention Specialist

Experts recommend fencing off family pools and removing pool ladders when not in use.
