BG store owner pleads guilty to weapons charges

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Four guilty pleas Tuesday from the man accused of having several weapons inside the Woodland Mall in Bowling Green in December.

Richard Schmidt pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of body armor and trafficking in counterfeit good.

Schmidt was the owner of Spindletop Sports Zone in the Woodland Mall.  Among the items found in a December 21st raid and a raid days later were the weapons, body armor and white supremacist materials.  Schmidt was not allowed to have the weapons because of a manslaughter conviction in the 1990s.

Schmidt did not say much in court Tuesday, only saying "Yes" and "No" to the judge's questions.  But his lawyer, Edward Bryan, said this case is not what it seems.

Bryan, who did not want to do an on-camera interview, said to 13abc off camera that Schmidt had no intention of harming anyone.  Bryan says that Schmidt is a survivalist and someone who studies culture.

As for the white supremacist materials and references to places like the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, his lawyer says Schmidt collects literature and is a gatherer of information.  Bryan wanted to rebut any notion that Schmidt wanted to harm anyone.

US Attorney Steve Dettelbach made this statement to 13abc:

"We're pleased Mr. Schmidt today admitted to breaking the law. The fact that he was able to assemble such an arsenal of weapons and ammunition is terrifying. The FBI and our law enforcement partners are to be commended for bringing Mr. Schmidt to justice."

Schmidt entered what's called a conditional guilty plea.  In a previous hearing, Schmidt lost a motion to throw out the search warrant for the weapons and the counterfeit goods.

A conditional guilty plea allows him to appeal the conviction down the line based on that ruling.  When sentenced on October 31st, Schmidt could face 10 years in prison.
