Ace Hardware Distribution Center in Perrysburg Twp. closing

Posted: Updated:

There is bad economic news for Wood County.

100 jobs are leaving the area when the Ace Hardware Distribution Center in Perrysburg Township closes next year.

It was a corporate decision to close the facility which has been in operation since 1973.

The move took township leaders and managers of independently-owned Ace Hardware stores by surprise.

The Ace Hardware Distribution Center in Perrysburg Township has supplied stores in Ohio, parts of Michigan, and Northern Kentucky for 40 years.

But the big facility will soon be just an empty building.

The warehouse is closing at the end of 2014, costing the area 100 jobs.

Distribution operations will be moved. Sources tell 13 ABC say they'll be moved to Columbus.

However, Kate Kirkpatrck, a spokesperson for Ace Hardware corporate won't comment on that. She says, "We took a look at our supply chain network and we would better serve our retailers by moving to a different facility."

"You've got the employees that spend the money in the township, in the area, and I don't know if they're going to end up transferring," says Gary Britten, a Perrysburg Township Trustee.

Britten says he found out about the upcoming closure through the news media.

"It's tough," says Britten. "They've been a very good neighbor over the years. And any business you hate to see close that's in your jurisdiction, but especially the ones that have been good neighbors."

"Nope, we're not closing," says Jim Kiefer, the manager of the Ace Hardware store on Main Street in Sylvania. "We're not going anywhere. We're staying right here."

Kiefer says it has been nice to be the first stop for delivery truck and it has been convenient to be able to run to the warehouse for supplies, but business will go on in his shop as usual.

"It really shouldn't impact our store," says Kiefer. "It might change our delivery schedule, but other than that it shouldn't impact our store at all."

The Ace Hardware stores in our area, including Sylvania and Bowling Green, will remain open. It is the distribution center that will be closing. A spokesperson for corporate says transition services will be made available for the 100 employees.
