Waterspouts reported on Lake Erie

Posted: Updated:
FAIRPORT HARBOR, Ohio -

At least three waterspouts were reported this Monday afternoon on Lake Erie, between Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania.

The first was reported 2 miles north of Ashtabula, Ohio at 1:38 PM.

Twenty minutes later, a trained weather spotter saw a waterspout 2 miles north of Fairport Harbor, Ohio.

Then at 2:14 PM, park officials in Erie County, PA saw a waterspout about 10 miles west northwest of Erie.

These waterspouts formed because of a strong contrast between relatively warm water and unusually cold, autumn-like air a few thousand feet overhead.

Lake Erie's water temperature, near Toledo, is 71 degrees.
