Toledo family fights to save dogs

Posted: Updated:

A Toledo family is fighting to save their two dogs. The dogs got loose and are accused of killing two pigs in Lambertville, Michigan in May. Tonight the owner of the dogs speaks out.

The family feels horrible about what happened, but they don't think their dogs should die because of it. They plan to appeal the court's ruling.

Nala and Bugger have been given a death sentence for allegedly killing the two pigs. The dog's owner says her son forgot to close the front door and the dogs accidentally got out.

"We don't leave just the storm door open because Nala has figured out how to jump on the door and she hits the latch and so he didn't close the exterior door and the only thing I can assume is she jumped on the latch where ever she goes he follows," says owner Jannie Juhasz.

According to a police report, Nala and Bugger allegedly attacked two pigs in a barn in Lambertville.

The owner of the pigs claims one dog "charged at her and she was able to use a board to block the dog and keep it secure in the stall."

The dog warden and Bedford Township launched an investigation and ruled the dogs should be euthanized.

"I don't believe they did it. It doesn't make sense. I don't understand how two 125 pound pigs in the same pen were killed by two dogs weighing a combined weight of 90 pounds, and they didn't get one injury on them. Those dogs didn't have any injuries, but the pigs are dead," says Juhasz.

Michigan law states an animal can be euthanized after one attack on poultry or livestock. The family thinks that law is wrong. The dogs are scheduled to die August 22. A Facebook page along with a petition has been launched to save the dogs.

The family hopes to get 1,500 signatures. The dogs' owners say they feel terrible about what happened.

"I want to make it right. I turned it into my insurance company. The insurance company has offered to make her whole. I feel horrible. I don't know what else to say. He means a whole bunch to me, and he's like my kid," says Juhasz.

The owner of the pigs declined to talk to 13abc.
