Was it murder or self defense? That's what UT and Toledo police want to know after an altercation between two male students turned deadly.

The Lucas County Grand Jury has decided not to file the charges in a fatal stabbing that happened at the University of Toledo over winter break and left one UT student dead.

UT Police Chief Jeff Newton says he's not really surprised the grand jury chose not to file criminal charges. Newton say there are just too many unknowns about what exactly happened in the stairwell of the dormitory that night.

The grand jury decided there was not enough information for an indictment.

Newton says it's known the two students, Josiah Galat and Elliot Littleton, were doing drugs the December evening of the fight, a "designer" drug called 25-i. He says this particular synthetic drug is known for causing violent behavior, paranoia and hallucinations, effects he says likely contributed to the stabbing.

Littleton was stabbed nine times during the fight and nearly died himself.
