Local children will learn new skills and techniques from Toledo Mud Hens players and coaches during the 9th Annual Gene Cook Foundation Baseball Camp for Kids on Tuesday, August 20 at 3:15 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
The camp is for children ages 6-13 who normally would not have the financial means to attend a baseball camp. Nearly 100 local children will participate in the camp. All kids receive a limited edition baseball, t-shirt and get to stay for the game to cheer on their favorite players.
The camp is in honor of former Mud Hens General Manager Gene Cook, who passed away in 2002. The Cook family created the Gene Cook Youth Athletic Foundation to provide Toledo area children the opportunity to participate in and learn through athletics. Gene Cook devoted 23 years to leading the Mud Hens and he always went out of his way for any child, especially at the ballpark. The family says it was important for him to create an extra-special lasting memory with Toledo Mud Hens for as many children as he could.
The Gene Cook Baseball game camp is an extension of that spirit and provides a unique experience to help inspire a true love for the sport of baseball in the hearts of the children."
