Ohio sales tax increase takes effect

Posted: Updated:

If you waited until today to make that big purchase, it's going to cost you more. The state sales tax is higher than it was last month, increasing from 5.5 to 5.75 percent.

In Lucas County, the rate is now 7 percent. It's 6.75 percent in Wood and Hancock counties, and 7.25 percent in Fulton, Henry and Sandusky.

Ohio lawmakers approved the increase as part of the state's $62 billion, 2-year state operating budget. The increase was part of a larger package of tax adjustments that will reduce overall business and individual taxes by an estimated $2.7 billion over the next three years. That includes a 10% cut to the personal income tax that will be phased in starting Sunday.

The Ohio Department of Taxation estimates 35% of an average Ohio family's spending is subject to the sales tax. Groceries, housing, medicines and education are exempt from sales taxes.
