MLK's dream inspires a new march

WASHINGTON (AP) - Standing on hallowed ground of the civil rights movement, President Barack Obama challenged new generations Wednesday to seize the cause of racial equality and honor the "glorious patriots"
In a moment rich with history and symbolism, tens of thousands of Americans of all backgrounds and colors thronged to the National Mall to join the nation's first black president and civil rights pioneers in marking the 50th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

University of Toledo students, faculty and community members held their own tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King on Wednesday.  Students marched across campus to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 'March on Washington'.  It was organized by the Gamma Nu chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and the Black Student Union.

Their goal was to raise awareness on today's social injustices and honor the late civil rights leader.  A few people who came out remembered hearing Dr. King's speech back in 1963.

"I think it was the first time that people around the world, but more importantly across the country who were black and white, really understood that message," says Kaye Patten Wallace who works for the University of Toledo.  She says she was only a few years older than the UT students when she heard the speech.

"It does my heart really good to see our young people understanding and really wanting to appreciate and value their history."

"He was taken away from us before his time but his dream still lives on," says rally organizer and Iota Phi Theta Gamma Nu Chapter president, David Grant.  "We have come a long way but we have so much more to accomplish."

Rally organizers want to make this march an annual event.  They say it could help students remember his vision and sacrifice.
