GM to lay off 135 employees at Defiance plant

Posted: Updated:

More than 100 people will be laid off from the GM plant in Defiance, the company announced Thursday.

GM tells 13abc in order to build more fuel efficient engines, it will need to use a mix with  more aluminum.  That, in turn, reduces the demand for iron casted components, which is why employees are being let go.

According to the company's statement, 48 temporary employees will be off the job beginning September 30th.  Then, 55 permanent workers and 32 skilled trades employees will follow.

The plant has been in Defiance for decades.  In fact, it's the city's largest employer with 1,300.  Many people who live there are concerned.

"It's GM.  It's one of the biggest auto manufacturers in the world, so when they're laying off people it kind of scares you," Ken Carroll, a Defiance resident said.

"It's kind of scary because then you're wondering if there is going to be more," Sarah Martin, a Defiance resident said.

13abc contacted UAW Local 211 for comment.  The union represents GM workers.  The calls were not returned.

The last time the plant was faced with layoffs was in 2009.
