Filmmakers to immortalize the Toledo Troopers

Posted: Updated:

You may be familiar with the Toledo Troopers, and soon the rest of the world may learn about them too. A movie is in the works about Toledo's own professional women's football team.

It's a snapshot of history, one that could soon make its way to the big screen.

"I think people are going to see this movie and hear this story and think, 'Wow. It really happened here in Toledo,'" says "Perfect Season" co-screenwriter Steve Guinan.

What happened was the Toledo Troopers, a team that went on to have the most wins in the history of professional football -- and the players were all women.

"Coming back, it's special. It's really, really close to my heart," says co-screenwriter Guy Stout. "I mean, it's literally, at its core, a son attempting to tell his father's story."

Guy Stout is the son of the Trooper's head coach. He co-wrote the screenplay with a fellow graduate of St. John's High School.

They recruited director Brett Leonard to head up the project. He's behind movies such as "The Lawnmower Man" and "T-Rex in IMAX 3D." He's also a graduate of Devilbiss High School, where the Troopers used to practice.

"The idea here is to make this not a Hollywood movie going into Toledo and then coming out of Toledo, but to make this a Toledo movie," Leonard says.

He calls it "A League of Their Own" meets "Remember the Titans."

The title is "Perfect Season." It's not a documentary. It's a bio-pic, and, if all goes according to plan, it will all be shot next spring in Toledo.
