Senior OH Lauren Rafdal tied her career high with 25 kills, but it wasn't enough as Toledo (2-3) dropped a 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 28-26) decision to Tulane (5-0) in its first match at this weekend's YSU Invitational.
Joining Rafdal in double figures in kills was senior MB Dakota Harkins with 10 kills and a team-best .381 attack percentage. Senior OH Jordan Kielty nearly registered a double-double with nine terminations and 11 digs.
Freshman libero Ellen Hays paced Toledo's defensive efforts in the back row with 18 digs, while senior RSH Becca Reidy matched her career best with six blocks to go along with eight kills.
Freshman OH Tea Juric spearheaded Tulane offensively with 26 kills and an impressive .477 ATK%.
The Rockets opened the match with a tight 26-24 opening-set victory with Rafdal closing out the set with a kill and one of her team-high three service aces.
The Green Wave controlled play in much of the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead, however, UT appeared ready to send the match to a fifth set following a Harkins kill that put the Rockets ahead 15-8. Tulane then scored six straight points to even the score at 16-16 and eventually took a 24-20 advantage. UT wouldn't give up though and scored four straight points on a Rafdal kill and three straight blocks. A pair of Reidy kills kept Toledo alive but the Green Wave took advantage of Rocket service error and attack error to end the match.
Toledo is back in action later today with a 5:00 p.m. matchup vs. St. Francis (PA).
