Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Johnson was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He is the second Falcon in as many weeks to earn the award, joining freshman running back William Houston.
Johnson made his first career start Saturday in a key early-season MAC contest at Kent State. He went 19-for-25 for 357 yards and two touchdowns as Bowling Green pulled away for a 41-22 victory. Johnson led the team from the start, guiding the Falcons on a nine-play, 77-yard scoring drive on the opening possession of the game.
He also led a drive late in the first half that concluded with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Jared Cohen that gave the Falcons the lead for good at 24-22. In the third quarter, he found Ryan Burbrink for a 92-yard touchdown pass that goes down as the third-longest completion in Bowling Green history. His 357 yards are the most for a MAC quarterback in a game this year as are his 374 total offensive yards.
Bowling Green improved to 2-0 on the season (and 1-0 in MAC play) with the victory over Kent State. The Falcons look to remain unbeaten Saturday when they travel to Indiana for a 12 pm kick-off on ESPNU.
