Bowling Green redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Johnson was named of eight Manning Award "Stars Of The Week". The Manning Award was created in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Johnson made his first career start Saturday in a key early-season MAC contest at Kent State. He went 19-for-25 for 357 yards and two touchdowns as Bowling Green pulled away for a 41-22 victory. Johnson led the team from the start, guiding the Falcons on a nine-play, 77-yard scoring drive on the opening possession of the game.
He also led a drive late in the first half that concluded with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Jared Cohen that gave the Falcons the lead for good at 24-22. In the third quarter, he found Ryan Burbrink for a 92-yard touchdown pass that goes down as the third-longest completion in Bowling Green history. His 357 yards are the most for a MAC quarterback in a game this year as are his 374 total offensive yards.
Johnson joins seven other quarterbacks to be named Manning Award "Stars Of The Week" – Michigan's Devin Gardner, Utah State's Chuckie Keeton, Oregon State's Sean Mannion, Oregon's Marcus Mariota, LSU's Zach Mettenberger, Georgia's Aaron Murray and Oklahoma State's J.T. Walsh.
