Early winter storm to slam Interior West, High Plains

Posted: Updated:
RAWLINS, Wyoming -

We may only be a couple of weeks into fall, but a major winter storm is coming together across the Interior West, and eventually into the High Plains.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect in parts of Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska and Colorado, with some locations expected to receive well over a foot of snow, and up to two feet in some higher elevations.

Along with the heavy snow, during the height of the storm, sustained winds will blow at 20-30 mph, with occasional gusts to near 50 mph, dropping visibilities to near zero on occasion.

On the eastern, warm side of the storm, severe thunderstorms are expected late this week from Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska into Iowa and southern parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The transition from summer to winter rarely comes quietly, especially in the interior West.
