FBI ranks Toledo 3rd in burglaries

Posted: Updated:

Toledo ranks third in burglaries according to the FBI. Despite the ranking Toledo police administrators say take the numbers released with a grain of salt.

FBI crime stats claim Toledo was ranked in the top five cities for property crimes in 2012. Michael McDonald lives on the east side.

"I'm just glad it hasn't happened to us," said Toledo resident Michael McDonald.

Flint and Toledo top the list in burglaries according to the FBI. Sgt. Joe Heffernan says the number of burglaries in Toledo has decreased. In 2011 Toledo recorded 8366 burglaries, 2012 6729 and so far this year the numbers are even lower.

"During that time we were coming off of historically low manpower levels and we addressed the way we were doing our policing. The start of 2012 we started with our com stat and data driven police strategy under Chief Diggs and since we've had that is when we've seen the major reductions in the area of burglaries," said Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Despite the FBI numbers this Toledoan says he'll continue to play it safe

"Keep the doors locked window closed and try to take as much precautions as I can," said McDonald.

The FBI uniform crime reporting comes out once a year.
