Local man becomes one of first to own a Jeep Cherokee

Posted: Updated:

A big day for a local man as he becomes one of the first to own a Toledo built Jeep Cherokee. The long awaited Cherokee began driving onto dealer lots this week. The Sandiford family went to Grogan's Towne right away on Thursday when they heard about the arrival of the Cherokee. They drove it and bought it on the spot. They picked it up Friday morning and they took us along for the ride. Nigel Sandiford has been waiting for months to buy a Cherokee, "I always wanted one of these. I have been tracking them on the computer for a long time." Today he became one of the very first people to own one, "So how exciting is this day? This is very exciting, I hardly slept last night. I woke up at 3am and couldn't get back to sleep!"

Delivery of the all new Toledo built product was pushed back while engineers fixed issues involving the transmission. After extensive tests they started shipping them to dealers on Tuesday. Nigel says whatever changes they made are working, "It's handling great. The transmission is very good, the gears are changing well, I love it!"While this is the first Cherokee, Managing Partner Denny Amrhein expects to stock dozens here on the Grogan's Towne lot, "Within a 30 day period we should have 50-60 of them and we'll probably keep our inventory at that level because we plant to sell 20-25 a month."

Nigel brought his wife and daughter along to pick up his new ride and he's making a special pick up tonight too, his granddaughter, "I'm picking her up from school and the first thing I am going to do is take her for a drive and then go to dinner." In addition to being one of the first to get a new Cherokee Nigel is marking another big milestone this month. He just became an American citizen last week.

The 13abc I-Team taking you to the experts tracking what's going into the Maumee River that's causing that Lake Erie algal bloom. Too much of the toxic algae triggered the "do not drink" order at the start of the August. The Maumee River is one of the lake's greatest water sheds, running more than 130 miles from Indiana through Ohio to the lake. Changes to it could make all the difference. One local university is at the forefront of tracking what's going into the river.
