Running on the same course they will compete on in two weeks for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship, Lourdes University's men's cross country team finished in 37th place at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge held at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Gray Wolves finished with 1,140 points while Saint Francis (Ill.) won the meet with 66 points, just edging out Olivet Nazarene for the team title by three points.
Vince Varricchio (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves with a time of 30:56.86, just over 16 seconds ahead of teammate Noah Roper (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.), who finished with a time of 31:13.22. Stephen Carl (Anderson, Ind./Anderson H.S.) was just behind Roper, posting a time of 31:26.73. All three runners posted personal bests on the afternoon.
Austin Farnsel (Evergreen, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) also registered a personal best on the eight-kilometer course, finishing in 33:01.30 while Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) concluded the scoring for Lourdes with yet another personal best, finishing in 33:38.10.
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) added a time of 36:28.31 for the Gray Wolves while Zach Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) crossed the finish line in 38:05.68. Cory Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde H.S.), running for the first time in more than a month, rounded out the Lourdes lineup with a time of 44:10.00.
Lourdes will return to Riverside Park for the WHAC Championship on Nov. 9 to close its inaugural season. The gun will fire at 11 a.m.
