Sophomore Ana Capotosto and junior Inma Zanoguera led a trio of Rockets in double figures with 19 and 16 points, respectively, as Toledo coasted to an 83-38 exhibition win over NCAA Division II power Ashland on Sunday in Savage Arena.
Capotosto added a squad-best 11 rebounds to collect a double-double, while Zanoguera collected a game-high four steals to pace the 2012-13 Mid-American Conference regular-season champion Rockets, who never trailed in the contest.
Other top performers for the Midnight Blue & Gold included freshman Janice Monakana with 11 points, senior Janelle Reed-Lewis with nine points and junior Stephanie Recker, freshman Olivia Braun and freshman Sophie Reecher with eight points each.
Senior Brianna Jones, junior Mariah Carson, freshman Lindsay Baker and freshman Elena de Alfredo did not dress for today's game due to injury.
UT connected on 44.6 percent (33-of-74) from the floor against the defending Division II national champions, including 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from three-point range, and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the charity stripe to improve to 5-1 all-time in exhibition games under sixth-year head coach Tricia Cullop.
The Rockets jumped out a 22-point lead at the intermission, 40-18, and were never really challenged. Toledo continued to pour it on in the second stanza, maintaining a 24-plus point bulge for the entire final stanza. Every UT player that dressed saw at least 22 minutes of action, and seven of the eight tallied at least eight points.
Toledo's defense also did its part in the 45-point triumph, holding Ashland to 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from the field. UT also forced AU into committing 30 turnovers, which it translated into 36 points.
Suzy Wollenhaupt led the Eagles with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Taylor Woods had 10 points.
Toledo open its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 9 versus 2013 WNIT champion Drexel in the first round of the Glass City Tournament at 2:30 p.m. at home. The opening contest of the second-annual tourney will be Mississippi Valley State vs. Villanova at Noon.
