The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Adam Almquist from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
Originally drafted in the seventh round (210th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Almquist has skated in 10 games with the Griffins this season, tying for first among the team's defensemen with seven points (0-7-7). He helped the Griffins to their first-ever Calder Cup championship during his first season in North America in 2012-13, recording 31 points (10-21-31) in 68 regular-season games and 10 points (3-7-10) in 21 playoff games. The 5-foot-11, 173-lb. defenseman tied for the postseason lead in goals and ranked fifth in points among AHL blueliners.
A native of Huskvarna, Sweden, Almquist also spent three seasons with HV 71 in the Swedish Hockey League prior to joining Grand Rapids. He registered 35 points (5-30-35) in 122 games with the club from 2009-12 and captured the SHL championship in 2010, tying for first in the league among defensemen with 11 points (1-10-11) in 16 postseason contests.
