Driver admits "trying to smoke pot" moments before head-on crash

Posted: Updated:

A driver is in custody after admitting to Troopers he was "trying to smoke marijuana" moments before a head-on crash.

It happened on Rte. 6, east of Helena around 8 a.m.

The lieutenant with the Fremont post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol tells 13abc a car swerved left of center, hitting a pickup and causing it to roll.

The woman behind the wheel of the truck and her passenger, a man, were taken to Fremont Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both were wearing safety belts.

The driver of the car, which came to rest in a ditch, ended up in the back of a squad car.

After telling troopers about the marijuana, investigators searched his vehicle and recovered the pot, along with drug paraphernalia.

Troopers are expected to release his identity once he is formally charged.
