Suburban residents prepare for water increases

Posted: Updated:

Perrysburg Councilman Todd Grayson has watched water prices steadily go up.  He says water and sewer rates jump almost five percent every year on average in Perrysburg.

"It's been ratcheting up for years," says Grayson. "But it's never been this kind of an increase until more recently."

Over the next three years, that jump could reach 13 percent.  That's because Toledo's outdated water treatment plant is in need of $300 million worth of improvements and environmental repairs.

"This is everybody's water. We have to understand we have a main plant that's in Toledo and we all have to share a cost in. They're doing the best that they can, but they have a ton of bills to pay. And those are going to be born by the rate payer."

The 125,000 households that depend on Toledo water won't see the increase until the new year.  Grayson is using this time to remind suburban residents that as city prices go up, so do theirs.

"The best thing is that we work together as a Northwest Ohio community and make sure that our treatment facility in Toledo works and that it works the best that it possibly can," comments Grayson.
