Plea deal discussed in Baby Elaina case

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

There are some new developments in the death of East Toledo toddler Elaina Steinfurth.  New documents, uncovered by the I-Team, show that a plea deal could be in the works before anyone has been charged in her death.

This development comes just about a week after the 18-month-old's death was ruled a homicide.  The autopsy report indicated joint fractures and injuries in her young bone that were consistent with inflicted injuries, not accidental.

Right now the baby's mother Angela and Angela's ex-boyfriend Steven King are charged with obstruction of justice.  Neither is charged with Elaina's murder.  New documents show that may be changing.

The letters were written to both King and Angela Steinfurth's attorneys last Thursday and Friday.  It is telling them they are receiving copies of the baby's autopsy report and the anthropology study done on her remains.  In the second letter, you will find the mention of a plea deal.

Lucas County prosecutors tell the I-Team there is no timetable for going to a Grand Jury in regards to the baby's death.  But clearly the case is moving forward and quickly based on these new documents.

In a letter from prosecutor Robert Miller, after outlining the autopsy and forensic reports that the pair will be receiving, he ends with this line:

"Please be advised that if plea negotiations are going to occur prior to seeking an indictment, time is now of the essence."

No one has been indicted for the baby's death.  The only indictments, so far, are for obstruction of justice.  But as these documents show with autopsy reports, talk of indictments to come and plea agreements it seems prosecutors have both King and Steinfurth at the center of the investigation into the child's death.

Angela Steinfurth is expected to be in court again next Wednesday.  King's next court date is set for December 2nd.  Both appearances only relate to charges of obstruction of justice.

Here are the letters:

The city of Toledo has big plans for the Reynolds Road corridor, and it's shelling out big bucks. Just last week, the city agreed to buy the site of the former Southwyck mall for $3M. That's if it can land a developer within 120 days. The designs call for a corporate headquarters. Southwyck closed in 2008. So did the Clarion hotel next door. The K-Mart next to that also pulled out, but today there's a welcome sign for some: A "now open" sign. It's on the front of the former K-Mart, showing of...
