Fire officials in Fremont have confirmed that one adult and one child were killed in an early morning house fire.

An early morning house fire in Fremont left two people dead, one of them a two-year-old girl.

Relatives identify the victims as Brenda Shorty and her toddler daughter Venetia. Brenda was the mother of six children.

Neighbors say the fire that left the May Street duplex in ruins was an intense one. Firefighters responded to a call a little after 4 a.m. on Saturday and discovered the home in flames. They later discovered two bodies inside the burned unit. Shorty's boyfriend made it out of the fire alive.

Neighbor Robert Robles was devastated.  "I come down this morning and I seen it all and I cried. I wanted to go in there and save her but what can I do. I mean you can't run through the flames."

Neighbors say Brenda's other five children were staying with friends at family at the time of the fire.

Brenda Shorty's cousin Raymond Mincey said the family is still in shock, "It's unpredictable. I was just here talking to her. It's hard to believe. I just think everybody for the prayers and support."

Both victims were transported to the Lucas County corners office for autopsies. Authorities tell us positive identification still has to be made. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Residents of a small Canadian island are being warned not to drink their well water because of potentially toxic algae in Lake Erie.
