Family holds final vigil for baby Elaina

Posted: Updated:

It's a place they've stood many times before.  At the corner of Federal and Leonard in east Toledo.

Tuesday night, Elaina's family and friends met one final time, hours after her mother and mother's ex-boyfriend were sentenced to life in prison for the little girl's murder.

"It's not the outcome I had hoped for," TJ Steinfurth, Elaina's father said.  "But it's some sort of justice."

Angela Steinfurth didn't speak in court.  The Lucas County prosecutor says Steinfurth tossed baby Elaina across the room because she was crying.

"It was a shock," TJ Steinfurth said.

Steven King, however, admitted his role saying he found Elaina on the bedroom floor.

She was bleeding and barely breathing.  That's when he says he covered her nose and mouth until she died.

He then described how he put her body in a garbage bag and hid it in the garage.

"When Steven spoke and said what he did I about fell out of my chair," Terry Steinfurth, Elaina's grandfather said.  "I can't picture anybody being that heartless."

The Steinfurths say there is a hold in their hearts that will always be empty.

"She's still not going to be back and it's hard," TJ Steinfurth said.  "But we've got to try and move forward from here."

But there is some comfort knowing justice was finally served.

"I just hope Elaina rests in peace, I hope she is glad we got her justice," Terry Steinfurth said.
