Findlay Police to train for active shooters in schools

Posted: Updated:

Findlay police are preparing to train how to handle an active shooter in a school building.

It's called "A.L.I.C.E.," which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate.

Several schools in our area trained over the summer. Findlay City Schools and police officers will conduct the exercises in January.

There will be a town hall meeting today at 7 p.m. at Donnell Middle School and one tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Glenwood Middle School.

Below is the official post from Findlay Police.

The event will center on the newly implemented philosophy of A.L.i.C.E which has been taught to all Findlay City School Faculty and Staff. A.L.i.C.E provides action items that people can do to increase their survivability during a Mass Killing situation. The training will be taught to all students of Findlay City Schools starting in January 2014. This presentation provides the opportunity for parents to come and hear what A.L.i.C.E is all about and what their children will be taught.

This event is not only for parents of Findlay City School students, the presentation will provide guidance to the community on how they should react should they ever be somewhere where an active shooting incident occurs. The skills that are taught in the school transfer out in the workplace, church, and other public places. Those attending will have the opportunity to ask questions and have a discussion with one of the members of the Findlay Police Departments School Safety Team. The team, which was implemented in 2012 consists of four officers have been trained and tasked with working with, consulting on safety issues and training in the Findlay City Schools.

The Police Department will conduct two separate meetings. The first will be on December 4th at Donnell Middle School in the cafetorium starting at 7:00 p.m. The second session will be on December 5th at Glenwood Middle School cafetorium. That one will begin at 7:00 p.m. as well. The meeting will last about 1-1 ½ hours.
