Cat overpopulation continues to be a big problem

Posted: Updated:

Local rescue groups are always looking for new homes for abused and abandoned animals and some are offering some incredible deals right now on cats and kittens. But they recommend that your new pet does not arrive on Christmas.

Like most shelters and rescues around the region, Planned Pethood and the Toledo Area Humane Society have a lot of dogs and cats right now. They're hoping you'll consider adding one to your family, but they say putting them under the Christmas tree is not a good idea. They recommend waiting until after the chaos of the holidays is over and go as a family to pick out your new pet or do it right now so your pet has a chance to adjust. Nikki Morey is the Executive Director of Planned Pethood,"If you are not planning a big party or festivities at your home you can get your new pet before Christmas. A lot of shelters and rescue groups like Planned Pethood and the Toledo Area Humane Society offer animals at a big discount just in time for Christmas."

Right now the Toledo Area Humane Society and Planned Pethood are both offering deals on cats and kittens. Kittens 6 months and under are $50 each and two for $75. Adult cats are $10. Morey says the cat overpopulation problem right now may be because our summer-like weather extended into fall, so some cats had 3 litters instead of the usual 2.
