Findlay schools implement ALICE training

Posted: Updated:

It's a scary thought, but deadly school shootings are now part of reality, from Columbine to Newtown.

"These types of incidents in schools are very concerning to any parent and I'd like to know what our schools intend to do about it," Susan Marshall, a Findlay parent said.

Findlay City Schools recognize the importance of having a plan.

For the last 2 years, the district has worked with the police department to put the ALICE program in place.

"It used to be, shut the door, turn off the lights and wait for police to arrive," Lt. Scott Lowry, Findlay Police, said.  "But as we study mass killings across the country, we find that doesn't work.  We have to get kids out of the building as quickly as we can."

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuated.

It gives teachers, students and staff a plan of action to increase chances of survival in case a gunman were to ever get in the building.

"If they can't evacuate we want them to bar the doors and if the intruder gets in, what can they do then?  Moving targets, throwing things at them, etc," Assistant Superintendent, Craig Cupferberg told 13abc.

So far, all of the district's principals and 475 teachers have been through the training.

Thursday, police and school leaders met with parents because the students are next.

"If those kids are trained and they know what to do, then prevention is what they need to do," Marshall said.

Most parents seem to be on board, but some have voiced concerns about what it teaches the kids.

School leaders and police insist they're not training students to fight off intruders, but instead, "it empowers the teachers and the faculty, staff and students so if bad things happen, they're not waiting around for someone else to tell them what to do," Lt. Lowry said.

It's a preventative measure to make sure schools are safe.
