Group brings Christmas cheer to homeless

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of people are bringing a brighter Christmas to the homeless and others in need at the Believe Center in Toledo.

They did it on pretty short notice, too. The idea was formed only about three weeks ago and they managed to pull the Helping Toledo's Homeless event together in time for Sunday.

Organizer Linda Wurns said, "We wanted to make a difference because it has to start with somebody and so its starting with us. our philosophy is that it's up to each and everybody to leave the world a better place than they found it and we're starting it right here."

The even was organized by a group called "Taking It To The Streets." They served hot meals, handed out warm clothing and toiletries and sent hundreds away with food baskets.

The clothing and toiletries were all donated by volunteers. The tight time frame caused a few hiccups.

Volunteer Shamra Willis said, "we actually had shirts ordered and they didn't get here in time so everybody went out and got purple shirts so we all still matched.. Every time there was a road block, everybody pulled together to figure out what to do to get through it."

The group says they hope this is the first of many annual events.
