Search vans hit streets to protect homeless from cold

Posted: Updated:

As the temperatures plummet, search vans from a local homeless shelter are hitting the streets of Toledo to make sure no one is left out in the cold.

Cherry Street Mission has multiple vans that spend the night searching for people who need a warm place to stay.

Charles Allen from the mission says there are many displaced individuals who try to make it on their own when the weather is warm, but when it gets colder shelters see more people seeking help. Allen says when temperatures drop, they see 50 to 75 more people in search of a place to stay.

"We always try to make room, whether we have to clear out an office space or a conference room. Wherever we need to put people to make sure people are in tonight or when there's cold weather. We try to make room for people and just continue  to make room for people."

But to make sure everyone is taken care of, the mission sends out search parties on cold nights.

Allen says, "They will go out and try to see if there's people  hanging out underneath the bridge, may not have a place to go, but we can invite them in and at least put them in a safe, warm place for tonight."

Allen says the mission prepares for the influx of people by having extra blankets cots and mats, but they always need donations of items like towels, washcloths and hygiene products.
