I-Team breaks down Medicaid expansion

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

Monday marks a big day in health care coverage for people in Ohio.  This is the first day people can apply for the new Medicaid expansion.

While most of the discussion and attention has been placed on the new Affordable Care Act and offering everyone insurance, this might be a piece that you missed.  It has a big effect of those who are healthy, do not have kids, but still cannot afford insurance.

If you've been border line to qualify for Medicaid in Ohio, it might be time to take a second look.

"So it's the people working at the dry cleaner, or the restaurant, or the grocery store that have not had access to health care that they'd needed.  So they've keep their fingers crossed and tried not to get sick," said Jan Ruma, with Toledo/Lucas County Carenet.

With the passage of the Affordable Care Act, came an expansion of Medicaid, a program that typically helps people with low incomes.

Here are the groups that qualify for Medicaid starting Monday:

-Children or pregnant women with family income up to 200% of federal poverty level

-Adults with income up to 138% of federal poverty level including parents, childless adults, and people with disabilities.

Here's a list that shows exactly what those income levels would look like depending on the size of your household:

Household size                                      138% of Federal poverty Level

1                                                                                $15,856

2                                                                                $21,406

3                                                                                $26,952

4                                                                                $32,499

5                                                                                $38,047

6                                                                                $43,594

7                                                                                $49,142

"I hope people that become Medicaid eligible take advantage of taking care of their health and getting preventative care so that they don't want until something becomes an emergency," said Ruma.

You will need to apply for these new benefits online, just like you would if you were searching for new insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act.  If you think you'd qualify for Medicaid, the Medicaid site is the place to go first.

"It's really the people who are between 100% and 138% that could accidentally buy an insurance policy when they are actually eligible for Medicaid," said Ruma.

The site to register for the new Medicaid benefits is benefits.ohio.gov
