Walbridge PD has success using Facebook

Posted: Updated:

From K9 units to special cameras, local police departments have a lot of resources to help them fight crime.

But in the last few years, Facebook has become on of them.  A good one.

"When you have the ability to reach out to the public like that so fast and so efficiently, it's going to be a great tool for law enforcement," Officer Jeff Goetz, Walbridge Police, said.

Officer Goetz is in charge of the Walbridge Police Department's Facebook page.

It was started less than a year ago but already has nearly 1,500 "likes" in a village with around 3,500 residents.

"Any kind of violent misdemeanor or OVI's, sometimes we'll put those on there," Officer Goetz said.  "It all depends if we think it's something that the public needs to know."

One big arrest, thanks to Facebook communication, was Clint Hill.

Earlier this year, police say he forced his way into a pregnant woman's home, brutally beat her in front of her kids, then abducted all of them.

In the end, everyone survived, but Hill took off.

"Vermillion PD saw it on our page, they did some digging because his mother lived in Vermillion.  We were able to track him to Elyria and Elyria PD picked him up," Goetz said.

Another bonus is the interaction it promotes between the community and department.

Many who live in Walbridge say crime isn't necessarily a problem but any tool to help keep neighborhoods safe is a good idea.

"I think all the police departments should use it," Sal Sanchez a local resident said.
