New bills battle Rx drug abuse

Posted: Updated:

A new set of bills aims to crack down on prescription drug abuse in Ohio.  The state Department of Health estimates five people die each day due to a drug overdose.  The three main goals of the new bills are to decrease the amount of painkillers being prescribed, keep addicts alive while getting dangerous drugs off the streets, and providing effective treatment for proper recovery.

"It would make a huge impact on lowering the number of people that get addicted to this," says April Schalow, who overcame her own battle with painkillers.

"We don't need any more broken homes especially because of an overdose," her husband Kyle Schalow tells 13abc.  He and his wife are working to make a national day of awareness of painkiller abuse starting next year.

Toledo Family Pharmacy owner Hussein El-Khatib uses an automated drug reporting system called OARRS to screen incoming prescriptions.  He says he also used professional judgement to see if any prescription request seems suspicious.

"You kind of get a sense of the patient to see if they really need this medication or they don't," says El-Khatib.  "There's now way possible you can follow the patient home to see if he's selling it, using it or abusing it, but we can do our best to stay aware."
