Snowfall provides boost for small businesses

Posted: Updated:

Crews across the region will finally get to see all of this week's preparation pay off.  ODOT workers have been out since the beginning of the week putting down salt and a special brine mix.  On Friday, trucks were also out for last minute inspections and material fill-ups.

State transportation leaders say workers start 24-hour shifts starting at 12 A.M. Saturday.  More than a 100 trucks will monitor eight counties in Northwest Ohio, with a third solely focused on Lucas and Wood counties.

The small flakes bring in big bucks for some local businesses.  The last two years were mild, so owners are hopeful steady snowfall will continue throughout the season.

"We do about three times as much revenue in the winter as we do in the summer, so we do like the winter around here," says Mike Bella who owns Bella's Lawn and Landscape in Toledo.  "We definitely need some snow to stay in business."

"A lot of our drivers are very excited to get out on the roadway for this one, they look forward to the big snowfalls," says Theresa Pollick with the Ohio Department of Transportation.  "We've been monitoring the forecast for days on end and now it's just a matter of waiting for the snow to fall."

Safety leaders remind drivers to take it slow on the snowy roadways and to give snowplows and salt trucks extra room.
