TPD's new police chief ready to take office

Toledo's next police chief is ready to take office. Lt. Bill Moton joined the Toledo police department in 1983.

"I believe in can do no excuses if we can get the job done we will find a way," he says.

The mayor called Moton's resume impressive. He is a decorated Marine corps war veteran.
He was promoted to sergeant in 1986 and lieutenant in 1989. He has served in a number of positions in the Toledo police department including, background investigation, field operations, swat commander, supervision of the homicide unit and, special victims unit just to name a few.

Moton says Toledo is becoming a safer city. He credits Chief Diggs new technology like the departments data driven policing for helping to improve safety in neighborhoods

"They're able to give us information about crimes where its being committed and also help us place our officers in the right sector," he says.

Moton's goal is provide leadership to help the mayor meet his campaign goals. Those include revitalizing the block watch program, fighting gun violence and adding more officers to the streets and  reopening the northwest district police station within 100 days of taking office.

"I'm looking with the challenges that will be presented," he says.  "I want to get to know the community leaders the religious leaders. I want to be able to go out in the middle of the night  and watch the officers at work. I want them to have input. When your doing the job all the of times when there are problems they know what those problems are they also sometimes know what the solutions are."

Moton says he's committed to being chief for one year at TPD. During that time, he will help to identify and groom the next chief to take his position. Lt. Moton will be sworn in as police chief in January.
