Sting operation near state line leads to several arrests

ERIE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

Eight people are now in police custody following a major bust on Interstate 75.

Police say the suspects were targeted in a sting after allegedly stealing fur coats from high end stores between Toledo and Detroit. Early Tuesday morning, officials say the suspects used a truck to smash inside Toledo Furs on West Central Avenue. Police arrested several suspects on the scene, but others got away in a stolen car they were followed by a task force from the Detroit area and Toledo Police.

"We were able to stop a vehicle before it hit the Michigan line on 75 just north of Alexis road. One of the other vehicles got into Michigan. Michigan state police stopped that just over the line." says Sgt. Joe Heffernan, Toledo Police

Officials say the suspects are being questioned by police. Charges range from receiving stolen property to criminal damage.

Toledo Police say a group tried to do a "smash and grab" at Toledo Furs on West Central Avenue just off of Monroe Street at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday. They allegedly tried to break in by driving a U-Haul truck into the back of the building, but failed.

"You can see the tire tracks in the back of the lot here. It came right over the ramp here into the wall," says Michael Tauber, one of the owners of Toledo Furs which has been selling coats at this location since 1969.

Tauber arrived to work Tuesday morning with police and a U-Haul in the parking lot.

"All that I was able to see was a U-Haul tried to run through the building and didn't get in," says Tauber. "It's kind of a fortress here so it would be pretty difficult to drive in."

Tauber says police arrested several suspects on the scene, but others got away in a stolen car. They were followed by a task force from the Detroit area.

The vehicle was stopped on I-75 north, just north of Alexis Road. The bust brought highway traffic to a standstill.

Toledo police say a police officer from Michigan saw the suspects try to break into Toledo Furs. They didn't get away with any coats.

"It was a theft ring from what they told me that has gone to, first they're stealing fur coats so that they can sell them during the cold weather and the holidays," says Tauber.
