Mega Millions jackpot soars to $636 million

Posted: Updated:

The Mega Millions has soared to $636 million dollars in advance of Tuesday night's drawing. It's the second largest in U.S. history.

13abc's Christine Long is in Curtice, home to a big lottery winner, with more on the last minute frenzy for tickets.

The odds of winning are astronomical, but we're at Shirley's Carry Out in Curtice, one of the luckiest lottery spots in our area.

People from all across the region with big dreams are driving here to buy tickets hoping to hit the jackpot.

"I don't feel lucky," says Michael McClear from Genoa as he buys about 100 tickets. "I am donating."

The Mega Millions jackpot is staggering at more than half a billion dollars.

"I would just count it," says 83-year-old Ray Frederickson when asked if he had a special plan for what he'd do with the money if he won.

Lottery players are taking a chance on defying the odds by buying their tickets at Shirley's which sold a ticket that won a $97 million Powerball jackpot.

Christine asks, "Do you have anybody interested in buying Powerball tickets today?" Shirley Loofborow, the owner, says, "No, it's mostly Mega."

Three doors down from Shirley's lives the big Powerball winner who on Tuesday is working on his 1965 Nova. Three years ago William Shanteau had one of the two winning tickets and first splurged on a red corvette.

He didn't quit his job at a Chrysler paint shop in Detroit and still lives in the same house.

"Winning the lottery hasn't changed me one bit," says Shanteau. "I'm still the same person."

The 49-year old invested about half, socked away money for his kids to go to college, and donates to charities to help the homeless.

Christine asks, "Did you buy Mega Millions tickets?" Shanteau says, "Sure did. I bought 91 of them."

Shanteau pooled money with a few work buddies hoping that lightning strikes once again.

"I feel it," says Shanteau. "I do, I feel it. I even told the guys at work I felt lucky this time."

You may be wondering what happened to Shanteau's corvette. He sold it. He says he let his kids drive it but they were racking up too many speeding tickets.

The Mega Millions drawing is Tuesday night. You can see it live on 13abc Action News at 11 p.m.
