East Toledo family sending 39 care packages to military

Posted: Updated:

They wanted to adopt a soldier, but they ended up adopting a platoon.

Now, one local family is asking for the community to help send care packages to the troops.

"We never thought it would get this big," marveled Debra Morales-Richards in her East Toledo home where a bedroom is now a collection center for care packages.

It's all thanks to Debra's daughter, Emilee.

Emilee, who's a 3rd grader at Raymer, asked her mom to send a care package to a soldier.

So the family signed up through Anysoldier.com.

Turns out, they accidentally agreed to send care packages to an entire squad of Marines.

"What was one soldier became 17," explained Debra. "We accidentally adopted a platoon."

Since then, other people have asked them to sponsor additional members of the military, including ones in the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Emilee and her mom are now sending packages to 39 people.

"We talked as a family and we decided that we could do it," said Debra."We'll make it work."
