I-Team warns: Beware the health care plan you pick

Posted: Updated:

A warning from the 13abc I-team before you pick a plan on the new healthcare exchange.  Some of the plans you look at may not have your doctor or the hospital you prefer.

You could be signing up for something you don't really want.  The key is to be prepared.  You need to have an idea of what your family needs and can afford.

Do you like using Promedica Toledo Hospital, the doctors at Mercy Saint Vincent's or the team at UTMC? That's a big part of what plan you'll pick on the exchange.

"That's going to craft your decision.  Not knowing those things, you're going to make a pretty uninformed decision" said Brad Clark with the Neighborhood Health Association.

Clark says when people are picking plans, premiums costs are priority #1.  Priority #2 is finding a plan that has doctors and hospitals you use in-network.  That varies county by county.

"What's important to you from a health care perspective?  Do you go to a certain doctor?  Do you go to a certain hospital?  Because we then have to make sure that the plan they're looking at, that those doctors and hospital networks are covered in that plan," said Clark.

Your best bet is to make a list before seeing a navigator.  Some people are coming in unprepared and to get coverage by January 1st, there is not much time to waste.  Especially if you are getting insurance for the first time.

"They're coming in with very little base knowledge of what's important to them and what all these terms mean," said Clark.

Here are the 7 companies that will be providing health insurance in the exchange for Northwest Ohio:

-Community (Anthem)

-Buckeye Community Health Plan

-Caresource

-Healthspan

-MHIC (Medical Mutual)

-Molina

-Paramount

We reached out to the three major hospital systems in the region to see which of the new health care plans consider their hospitals in network.

 Mercy

In all counties, Healthspan, Medical Mutual, and Molina consider Mercy "in-network"

Promedica

In Lucas County, Paramount, Anthem, Caresource, and Buckeye consider Promedica "in-network"

In Fulton and Wood counties Paramount, Anthem, and Caresource consider Promedica "in-network"

In Allen Defiance, Henry, Hancock, Putnam, and Seneca counties Paramount and Anthem consider Promedica "in-network"

UTMC and University of Toledo Physicians

In all counties, Medical Mutual and Molina consider UTMC and UTP "in-network"
