Deadline for Cincinnati streetcar project Thursday

CINCINNATI (AP) - Cincinnati lawmakers are set to decide the future of the city's streetcar project as a federal funding deadline looms.

The Federal Transit Administration has given the city until Thursday to make a decision, the same deadline streetcar supporters have to find private-sector funding for operations.

The costs to do away with the project have been estimated as high as $47 million. The city also would lose out on $45 million in federal funding.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that a study released Wednesday by global auditing firm KPMG projected the streetcar's annual operating costs nearly $1.5 million lower than originally projected.

Newly elected Mayor John Cranley opposes the project, though he's said he'd support it if backers find a way to pay the operating costs.
