Man hit by wrong way driver: "He was just going aimlessly"

Posted: Updated:

Toledo police are waiting for test results to determine if a 66-year-old man from Wood County was intoxicated when he drove the wrong way on I-75 and crashed.

It happened around 9 p.m. on Wednesday near the Ottawa River Road exit.

Michael Kane of Haskins remains in critical condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

No one else was hurt.

Police don't know yet if Kane was confused, had a medical issue, or was drunk when he got onto I-75 in the wrong direction and straight into oncoming traffic.

"I seen him probably a quarter mile in front," says 19-year-old Lance Joseph of Maybee, Michigan. "And he looked like he was going faster than the posted speed."

Joseph was driving three friends home Wednesday night when his Jetta was hit by an SUV.

"He was in the shoulder when I seen him and then he started cutting across all three lanes," says Joseph who swerved to avoid a head-on collision. "He was just going aimlessly."

The driver of the SUV was 66-year-old Michael Kane from the village of Haskins, which is located about 20 miles south of Toledo.

Police say Wednesday night Kane got onto the expressway at Alexis Road heading south in the northbound lanes. He clipped three other vehicles and then slammed into a semi truck.

"He ricocheted off the van, hit us, and then me and that van hit the guard rail together," says Joseph.

"We're very fortunate nobody died," says Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department. "These kinds of accidents are a policeman's worst nightmare."

Police don't know yet what Kane was doing before he got onto the expressway or why he went the wrong way.

"We don't know," says Sgt. Heffernan. "It could've been anything from some type of medical event, some type of confusion on his part, or maybe drug or alcohol related, we just don't know at this time."

Charges are pending in this case depending on the outcome of the toxicology tests. The results aren't expected to be back for several days. Kane could be facing felony charges or a simple traffic citation.
