More K-9's join the ranks at TPD

Posted: Updated:

The Toledo Police Department put some more paws on the ground today.  Four new K-9's were officially added to the ranks and they went right to work! In fact, while we were in the process of meeting them they were called out to help track down a burglary suspect. Earlier Friday morning they caught two suspects. So they've already earned their keep.

The department now has nine K-9's. They are all German Shepards imported from Europe. Some of their commands are given in German. The four newest dogs are named JJ, Luke, Nero and Yuma. The dogs go through extensive training in Germany. They then go through more training after arriving here in the United States. After that they are each paired up with an officer and then the teams go through even more training and certification.

Seven of TPD's dogs are cross trained for tracking and narcotics or explosives detection. The other two are strictly drug dogs. In just the last two months the dogs have made 35 apprehensions and done numerous tracks and searches. Sgt. Joe Heffernan says they have all proven their worth time and time again, "The way they can track someone is simply amazing. Whatever people think they can do to cover up their scent or throw them off , the dogs are on it. The handlers are very good at working with them to get the best out of the dogs and as the dogs get more time under their belts so to say they will get even better at what they do."

The department plans to add at least two more K-9's to the ranks next year. Seven of the dogs now on the force are fairly visible in their work, riding in patrol cars on all shifts throughout the city, so you may have a chance to see them work.
