SUV crashes into Marathon gas station

Posted: Updated:

A Marathon gas station in Monroe is facing major damages after an SUV crashed into it in an attempt to steal an ATM machine.

Roy Hanna has been the owner of the Marathon gas station and Roy's Mart for three years. He takes pride in his business being very clean and tidy, but he says that's not what it looked like early Friday morning.

"A total mess; everything was piled up all over the floor," said Hanna.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. at the Marathon gas station, 15278 S. Dixie Hwy. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene after Central Dispatch received information about a commercial burglary.

The crime was captured on the stations surveillance cameras. It shows the two suspects crashing a stolen maroon Dodge Durango into the front of Roy's Mart. The door and front wall of the station crumbling to the ground.

Then two suspects wearing hooded sweatshirts exited the vehicle and tied a strap around the ATM machine. They tried to pull the ATM out of the store, but failed and left empty handed.

The alleged crooks left front of the Roy's Mart in ruins.

"It's more of a heartbreak then anything else. It's going to cost me either way, it's costing me time. It's costing me a lot of heartache," said Hanna.

Hanna wants to let costumers know, despite the damage to the front of the building, Roy's Mart is still open for business.

Susan Griffin is a regular costumer who stops at this Marathon gas station twice a week.

"I was surprised. I thought are they under reconstruction or what happened."

With Christmas less than a week away, Hanna says he is not letting this devastation ruin his holiday spirit.
"Hopefully we will stay in business for the next couple days. I don't really know, never been in this situation before."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe Sheriff's Detective Bureau at (734) 240-7530.
