3 injured when apparent tornado strikes Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

HUGHES, Ark. (AP) - The St. Francis County Sheriff's Office says an apparent tornado damaged three homes and injured three people near the small town of Hughes, Ark.

Dispatcher Leslie White says the apparent tornado struck late Saturday afternoon near Hughes, a town of roughly 1,400 residents about 35 miles southwest of Memphis, Tenn. She did not know the severity of the injuries.

The Crittenden County Sheriff's office is reporting that vehicles were pushed off of Interstate 40 just west of West Memphis, Ark., by what may have been powerful straight-line winds. A state police official says troopers are working multiple auto accidents and that traffic on the interstate is backed up for several miles in both directions.

Forecasters are warning of possible tornadoes in an area stretching from southern Louisiana to southern Indiana.
