Slain Ohio child mourned as "special girl"

SMITHVILLE, Ohio (AP) - A 9-year-old allegedly raped and strangled by a neighbor in northeast Ohio was eulogized as a special girl who touched the lives of others.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Reann Murphy. Her body was found six days earlier in a trash bin near her trailer park home in Smithville southwest of Akron.

The Smithville Brethren Church service remembered Reann as a sweetheart with a disarming smile but still tough enough to wrestle.

Pastor Art Carr called her "a special girl who touched our lives."

After the service, an aggravated murder, kidnapping and rape indictment returned by a grand jury was announced by the prosecutor.

Twenty-four-year-old Jerrod Metsker has been locked up on $1 million bond. His attorney has declined to comment on the case.
