After dropping its opening round game of the Saint Xavier Midwest Tournament, No. 25 Lourdes bounced back on Sunday afternoon with a 68-64 victory over Goshen at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill.
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) tallied a double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds while the Gray Wolves went to the free throw line 44 times in the contest.
A 7-0 run by the Maple Leafs gave Goshen an early 15-10 lead seven minutes into the contest. Lourdes fought back to take the lead 19-18 on a layup by Jerome Talton (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw H.S.) and maintained the advantage the rest of the half, taking a 30-24 lead into the break.
The Gray Wolves scored the first six points of the second half to increase the lead to 12 two minutes into the stanza. Goshen answered with a 20-7 run to retake the lead 44-43 at the seven minute mark. Lourdes immediately retied the game on a free throw by Steinmetz and took the lead on a layup by him on the next possession.
A 14-2 run by Lourdes put the Gray Wolves back on top 57-46 with two minutes to play before Goshen made one late run, closing to within three in the final 10 seconds. Lourdes hung on to advance to Monday's fifth place game in the tournament.
Ron Dukes (Saint Louis, Mo./North County Christian H.S.) scored 13 points for Lourdes while Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) added 10 more as the Gray Wolves had three players finish in double figures. The Gray Wolves outrebounded the Maple Leafs 38-27 on the afternoon.
Stefon Luckey and Billy Geschke led Goshen (4-10) with 14 points each while Jerron Jamerson added 13 points. Tre Boyd made it four Maple Leafs to finish in double figures with 11 points.
Lourdes (10-4) will close out tournament action on Monday afternoon, facing either #9 Davenport or Viterbo. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. EST.
