Camo-clad elves in kayaks save Christmas for Tiffin girl

Posted: Updated:

After flooding forced her family out of their home, a five-year-old girl in Tiffin will soon learn that Santa will find her no matter what.

This Christmas Eve, 13abc's Christine Long met the kayaking elves who saved Christmas.

The Sandusky River in Tiffin is swollen over its banks this Christmas Eve.  Several roads remained closed on Tuesday.

Down Duchess Lane, you can see in the distance a red brick home surrounded by water.

"I think at this point it's close to the highest it has been," says Nicole Randell.

People gather at the water's edge watching as two men fill kayaks with Christmas gifts.  The gifts were left behind as the family who lives there fled the floods this weekend.

"I told my mom if I have to swim to my house to get that stuff out, I'm going to," says Randell, a mother of a five year old girl.

Randell thought they'd be back home before Christmas.  But with time running out and no money left to replace the presents, she put out a call for help on Facebook.

"Santa's got to come," says Randell. "Santa is coming tomorrow morning."

Through friends of friends, two men who don't know the Randell family answered the call.

"My cousin saw something on Facebook and he called us and said, ‘Hey, would you mind going to help somebody?'" says Brian Burns. "Let's do it."

The camo-clad elves brought their floating sleights to paddle through the water and rescue Christmas gifts for a five year old.

"Something nice to do," says Jeremy Renninger. "Kid's gotta have a Christmas."

"It's amazing," says Randell. "It just shows that there are still good people. There are still people that are willing to help."

The Randell family thanked the guys over and over for their generosity.  They also bought them each a case of beer.
