Vast majority of Americans dissatisfied with Congress' performance in 2013

Posted: Updated:

The office doors are closed and Congress is out of session for the annual holiday break. But the overwhelming majority of Americans aren't happy with the job legislators did anyway. A recent CNN poll reported that 75% of Americans believe this year legislators were a "Do-Nothing" Congress. John Hudak, a Fellow in Governance Studies at the Bookings Institute, said Congress avoided many big issues this year including tax reform and the Farm Bill, not to mention the government shutdown in October that lasted nearly 3 weeks. Congress also dodged extending federal unemployment benefits. Starting Saturday, 1.3 million Americans will lose those benefits.

But if the American public is hoping for a more productive legislative body in 2014, they may be disappointed. Hudak noted that, "The Congress in 2014 is probably going to look a lot like the Congress in 2013…Needs will go unmet. There will be a variety of needs that go unmet. The rhetoric will remain the same; it will be bitter, it will be partisan, it will result in very few solutions for the public."
