Warm temps thrill golfers, trip skaters

Posted: Updated:

Saturday's unseasonably warm temperatures made local golfers happy, but caused problems with for another outdoor activity usually associated with December.

It's been a weather roller coaster in Northwest Ohio in December. Snow followed by heavy rains and flooding. But on Saturday, it was sunny skies and temperatures nearing 50.

Golfers like Louis Threet hit the greens. "The sun is shining today, it's just a bonus. You can't beat it.

Despite the snow left on the ground, golfer Bob Bagey said, "The greens are totally frozen, so anything that bounces off the green pretty much goes 100 yards farther."

Not everyone is excited about the spring like weather. Warmer temps were making it hard to keep the Ottawa park Ice Rink in skating condition.  Half of the rink was blocked off by cones due to melting ice.

Toledo's Supervisor of Recreation Darlene Herwat said, "The skates will start to dig into it and it's only about an inch and a quarter thick. It can become hazardous; trip and fall and injuries."
