Lack of benefits can motivate job hunt for some

Posted: Updated:

The more one million people who lost long-term unemployment benefits on Saturday may have to settle for jobs that they wouldn't have considered in the past and that can be a big adjustment.

Tyree Slaughter says, "You get accustomed to living off that kind of pay, you know your bills, you get a car, you get a car note, so I don't think you should settle for anything."

Slaughter says it was hard enough living on the half of his previous salary that unemployment provides, but after he lost his benefits, it was even more challenging. But he admits it was motivation. "It did it's little purpose, you know. But cutting unemployment off motivates you to get another job."

He's says it's a challenge finding a well paying job, but benefits have to end at some point.

Ronald Bryant says his young nephews have been trying to find work, but can't. "It's not because they don't want a job. It's because they can't find a job to support their family. When they get a job it's not enough to actually support them, they have to go to food banks and that sort of thing."

James Weinrich says he's avoided unemployment by taking jobs he might not have liked. "Because I have a fiance and a kid that I have to take care of. So whatever puts food on the table, you know?"
